The Blackshield commander is in charge of the Blackshield forces on the colony. They command the corpsmen and Blackshield troopers.
Job Description
The shift commander of the Blackshield, effectively the equivalent of a Captain by traditional military ranks. The Commander’s primary duty is to oversee the day’s operations, patrols, and activities. While they should rely on their sergeant for disciplinary matters and field command, the Commander is responsible for direction and issuing commands. The Commander should be well versed in field tactics, be able to prepare combat operations, know what equipment is necessary, and then, in special circumstances, lead the unit from the front. This is not a desk jockey’s job, and resting on one's limited laurels will earn you no true respect. Furthermore, your job is to assess threats to the colony, and accordingly deal with them. Whether it is through brutal violence, cunning tactics, or diplomacy, it is the Commander's duty to protect the colony from all threats.
You are concerned with the following people:
- Troopers: These are your brothers in arms, and it's your job to control them. If they're being incompetent resource wasters, yell at them and get them to fall in line. If they continue, tell them to stop or have them demoted. A trooper that does not do his job properly shouldn't even have this job in the first place.
- Corpsman: They act as the combat medics and patch up both you and your troopers in battle. Make sure they are heavily stocked with medical supplies and try to keep them alive so they can keep you alive.
Strategy
Troopers, prepare for battle
The first step towards keeping the colony safe is to ensure that your own troopers aren't a threat. The Blackshield defends the colony, they are not concerned with hunting down criminals but dealing with exterior threats. Make sure that all of your personnel are familiar with the regulations regarding Laws and Standard Operating Procedure so they don't break them by acting with authority they don't have.
Once your force is up to speed on the rules and regulations, send them out on patrol. Pay attention to all the radio channels for any calls for help. If there are any, dispatch some troopers to handle it, and make sure to go with them if you expect hostile fauna or forces. Make sure that your troopers work in pairs and check in on a regular basis.
Bringing down the Hammer
Unless the marshals ask you to or there are no marshal forces currently active you should be actively directing your Blackshield members towards patrols or just general watch dog work. In time of peace letting your staff relax or volunteer to aid other departments is not only recommended but encouraged. Your corpsmen can volunteer as paramedics for medical, combat medics for prospectors, or escorts for miners. Just as useful your troopers can volunteer as Provosts (basically Military Police), prospector guards, or just do general patrols by keeping an eye out for trouble.
If one of your staff misbehave, yell at them, or in more serious cases, show them the inside of a cell. Keep them busy by sending them on patrols, leads, and follow-ups.
Office
Your office is in the Blackshield department. It holds various equipment for use in apprehending and detaining criminals. Your office also has both a security records computer and a security camera console from which you can use to monitor the colony from the comfort of your desk chair.
Links to Other Departments
As Blackshield commander, you coordinate your actions with the warrant officer, the other heads of staff, and your troopers. You will often work with medical, when a trooper or you are injured in battle. When a threat damages colony infrastructure, you will work with the guild to determine what happened and whether it's safe for them to begin repairs. Supply and research can get you high-powered weapons if you need them. You should have open and active communications with the marshals, given you share radio communications and departments.
